INTRODUCTION

Karatu is a highland town on the main safari route between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Its location places it close to the entrance to Ngorongoro and directly along the route towards the Serengeti.

The town itself is busy and functional, with shops, markets, and services used by local residents and safari travellers. Beyond the centre, the surroundings become greener and quieter, with farmland, coffee-growing countryside, and lodges spread across the lower slopes of the Ngorongoro Highlands.

Many safari itineraries include a night in or around Karatu before visiting Ngorongoro or continuing towards the Serengeti.

KARATU AND THE SURROUNDING HIGHLANDS

Karatu sits below the Ngorongoro Highlands in an area shaped by farming, coffee production, and cooler highland conditions. The town is surrounded by cultivated land, villages, and greener countryside, with many lodges positioned away from the centre.

The wider district includes several different landscapes, from higher agricultural areas to land descending towards Lake Manyara and the Rift Valley. Coffee, wheat, barley, maize, and beans are among the crops grown locally, reflecting the importance of agriculture to the area.

For travellers, the surrounding highlands provide a quieter setting than the town itself. Properties may sit among gardens, farms, or coffee-growing countryside, making Karatu feel less like a simple overnight stop and more like a comfortable part of the journey.

WHY STAY IN KARATU?

Karatu offers a wider choice of accommodation than the crater rim, including lodges set among farms, gardens, and coffee-growing countryside. It is also considerably better value for money, allowing travellers to stay close to Ngorongoro without paying the premium attached to crater-rim properties.

It sits naturally between Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti, helping reduce unnecessary backtracking on a northern circuit safari. For travellers who prefer a quieter setting, the properties outside the town provide a more relaxed base than the centre.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Karatu can be visited throughout the year, as its main role is as part of the wider northern safari route rather than a seasonal destination.

The drier months generally make travel easier, while the rains bring greener countryside and cooler conditions. As a highland town, mornings and evenings can feel noticeably cooler than in the lower safari areas, particularly between June and August.

WHERE IS KARATU?

Karatu lies in the northern highlands of Tanzania, between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The town sits along the main road connecting Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti.

Its location keeps it close to the entrance to Ngorongoro while remaining outside the conservation area. The surrounding district extends across farmland and highland countryside, with many lodges positioned beyond the town centre.

ENTRY FEE NOTE

Karatu lies outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, so travellers do not pay conservation-area entry fees simply to stay there. The applicable fees are charged when entering Ngorongoro as part of the safari.

GETTING THERE

Karatu is reached by road from Arusha, typically via Lake Manyara and Mto wa Mbu. It sits directly along the main route towards Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, so it fits naturally into a northern Tanzania safari itinerary.

The journey from Arusha usually takes several hours, depending on traffic, road conditions, and any stops made along the way.

PLANNING YOUR STAY

Karatu is most often included for one or two nights, depending on how the wider route is arranged. A single night works well when travelling through the area, while a longer stay allows more time to enjoy the accommodation and surrounding highlands.
